Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!
That is right folks, it is off to work I go!

I am typing this right fast as I head out to work now for my very first day as the project manager with my new company. I am going to be officemates with Ranger Rick. So, for those in the know, it will be immediately clear where I work...the rest will just have to Google my little clue.

I have been off for six solid weeks, it has been like heaven. Mostly, except you don't have money, but I had time and rest and friendship and a much needed rest. Maybe soon, I will post something about my recent adventures, but for now, as I leave for my first day of work, I leave you all a question...

What do you do for work? What is your job title? What do you do everyday? Do you commute? Do you like it? How long have you done it? How did you get started in this field? I just wanna know what other people on my friends list do for a living!

I swiped this idea from [info]bigfundrew, I found his post like this fascinating!

I've been in the fetish industry for 12 years and began my carear as a Paddle Maker.
My commute takes about 30 seconds and is exactly 14 steps up the staircase.

I am a dog walker / animal massage therapist / pet sitter / and dog behaviorist. I do some commuting, mostly on foot. I have been walking dogs for 3.5 years. I love it lots, no inter office conflicts with co workers at all. I started walking dogs when I lost my last "traditional" type job.

Hey, no sweat, I give my number out for work a lot and don't really keep track of who gets back to me.

woohoo! congrats on your new job! i'm so glad that the time off provided you with some much needed rest, you deserve it.

i've been a nonprofiteer for 3 years, working in fundraising/resource-development for 2. i commute 50 minutes each way via subway which i usually love b/c it gives me time to unwind and read/listen to music. there are things i like and don't like about work, but what i like the most is that i understand more about how nonprofits are structured and run. also, i love being able to help my friends and other smaller nonprofits with fundraising skills and advice.

I work in a library at a research institute for a very fancy public university. I have worked in libraries for over 25 years. I've worked here for 18 years. I love my job most of the time. I get to do some fantastic research, really be a part of major change in ways people work. My resarch is global in perspective and I get to see results in living wage campaigns, family medical leave, etc...

I have a 20 minute commute if I walk, 10 minute if I ride my bike, or 5 minutes if I drive my car when it's raining too much or I'm lazy.

I've always loved libraries and where else would I work.

I am a stagehand at the Patriot Center at GMU. I've been working there for almost 4 years. My commute is roughly 1/2 an hour each way. I am a theater major, I figured that this would be the best way to get hands-on experience. Whenever a major concert/tour comes into town I unload, set-up, breakdown, and load up shit (lights, sound, set, backline, carpentry, audio, and video). My job usually happens on the weekend, no regular schedule, in one shift I work usually anywhere from 15-20 hours in a day.

I'm a solicitor, or rather, a solicitor advocate. Just started the job after Easter so will take a while to find my feet.

I commute by car and it takes me about 20 mins each way. The car is my brother's though and will need to go back to him soonish, and I'm guessing the commute will then end up being around an hour or so each way.

I like my job so far but it's pretty stressful being thrown into unfamiliar situations. I enjoy the client base, mostly legal aid clients - some real interesting characters and some very sad stories. I quite like doing the first interview (free!) and trying to help people - not always possible but at least people can go away with more information they had before.

I got into law - well, at a young age I guess. When I was 7 I wanted to be a lawyer and put my stepfather in jail. Well, I ended up doing that anyway, but not as a lawyer :) As I grew older and had some self esteem issues, I didn't think that I was brainy enough to be a lawyer. so I studied sociology rather than law at uni. I drifted in and out of jobs, always finding them unchallenging. When I went to Japan and lived there for 2 years I did some very serious thinking about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, especially as I was potentially going to be working for another 30 years. I really wanted to do something that I would love, so I sat down, figured it out, and decided to go back to NZ and do a law degree. So glad I did.

BTW, this is a great idea for a posting, I'm gonna grab it myself at some stage. Some of your replies have been truly fascinating!

Oh, it's so good to hear from you!

I am a sign language interpreter, as you know. I spend many hours a day sitting around doing very little, and then I spend short bursts of time engaged in intense activity that leaves me exhausted. I do commute to get here, and I love my job! I have been interpreting for four and a half years now, and it amazes the hell out of me that I went from being "mostly fluent" in ASL to having both national-level certifications in that short span. Plus, I have a career I love and I'm 26 years old. I got started in this because as "a signer" I was asked to interpret for a sci-fi convention, and then when I lost my boring telecom job a friend suggested I could make the switch to interpreting. And I did!

Although this is going to change in late August, when my full-time job will be "a student" and I will only be interpreting part-time. That will leave me open for a lot more freelance work, so if you know anybody who needs a terp for any sort of job, give them my name!
